Strength: Large Deeply Lobed Leaves With Huge Acorns
Bur Oak is the Oak tree with the large deeply lobed leaves and very large acorns. This tree is known for its large acorns. The acorn cup that holds the acorn has little burrs or rough scale like growths. This burr-like acorn cup is where the Bur oak gets its name. The acorns are sometimes used in fall floral arrangements, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations. It is native to North Central Texas but not in the San Antonio area. It grows very well here.

Strength: A Proven Performer
Bur Oak is a proven performer. You can count on Bur oak to be very tough and drought tolerant. Bur Oaks are native to North-Central Texas but not around the San Antonio area. But they have been planted all throughout town. They get better and better with age.

Strength: A Majestic Shade tree That Gets Better With Age
Bur Oak becomes a large shade tree though it is not a fast grower. It does, however, have quality growth that holds up over time. Bur Oak is a type of White Oak. Similar looking species of White Oaks can be seen in other parts of the country. Bur Oak casts a deep shade which is good to cool the summer heat.

Weaknesses: Not A Fast Growth Rate
Bur Oak has a moderate but not fast growth rate.

Weakness: Deep Shade Not Good For Turf Grass
Bur Oak casts deep shade so may shade out turf grass planted underneath.

Weakness: Large Acorn And Leaf Clean-up
Bur Oak makes huge acorns that need to be cleaned up as well as large leaves.

Weakness: Doesn't Contrast With Native Trees
Bur Oak does not provide much of a contrast to the other dark green native trees in our area. It has dark bark and dark green leaves.
