Finding a Maple tree that can handle the harsh South Central Texas climate is a difficult task. Most Maples have no problem with our cold snaps, but die off in the brutal summers. While the Bloodgood Maple can survive most of Texas summers, they are one of the least heat hardy maples we would recommend. Japanese Bloodgood Maples do better the more mature the tree is. Younger Bloodgood Maples may die during a heat wave especially with poor watering habits. Although the Bloodgood can be a tough tree to keep alive, its one of a kind red leaves make it highly sought after and desired. During spring, the Bloodgood will look its best. During a mild summer the Bloodgood may lose leaves, get sunburn or have leaf shrivel. Keeping the Bloodgood watered correctly is paramount. Although the Japanese Maple does not like to be soggy all the time, letting it dry out completely for long is also not recommended. It requires a delicate balancing act and we only recommend the Bloodgood maple for experienced Maple Tree gardeners and we recommend buying a Bloodgood that is no smaller than a 15 gallon. Bloodgood, like all trees, do need nutrients but its important to go light and easy. Bloodgood Maples can easily be burnt and killed by over fertilization. The Bloodgood is on the slower side of growth rate.
