Strengths and Weaknesses Listed
All trees have weaknesses and strengths. In order to thoroughly evaluate a tree, you should consider both. Let me begin by offering some strengths of Southern Magnolia and then I will describe some weaknesses. You will be happy to discover that this trees strengths overcome its weaknesses! In fact, from our viewpoint, Southern Magnolia makes our "Top-Twenty" list coming in at number #8.  But perhaps, it will become your number #1 choice.

Strength: Large Glossy Evergreen Leaves

A Southern Magnolia has so many strengths and its large glossy green leaves are definetly one of them. These large shiny leaves are also evergreen, so you can have nice green color and privacy all throughout the year.

Strength: Large Very Fragrant Flowers

The large, beautiful cream colored flowers are unique for Texas trees. They also smell wonderful, "like a magnolia blossom." They set a standard for nice smelling flowers that others compare to.

Strength: Beautiful Form

When a Magnolias lower limbs are allowed to grow they will shape themselves much like a Christmas tree. I think they look their very best this way. But if you would like a more traditional shade tree then you can trim the lower limbs and the tree will develop a more spreading crown.

Strength: An East Texas Native That Does Surprisingly Well

Southern Magnolia is native to East Texas and yet does surprisingly well here in the alkaline soils of the San Antonio area. They still keep their nice green color. They do appreciate soil enhancement but will still grow nicely with some occasional irrigation. You can see them growing wild in the Big Thicket National Preserve and throughout the southeastern states.

Weaknesses: Will Drop Leaves During Drought

When a Magnolia gets dry it drops some of its large leaves. Even though the tree is considered evergreen it  tends to drop leaves throughout the year. This can create a problem in areas where the large leaves cannot be mowed such as on river-rock surfaces. I would not recommend planting a Southern Magnolia near a pool since those large leaves will need to be cleaned up.
